The ancient market town of Tadcaster has a long and chequered history. Originally named Calcaria (place of limestone) by the Romans, it was initially a small settlement, serving as a resting place for travellers and a staging post on the London (Londinium) to York (Eboracum) road. The present bridge crossing the river was built around 1700 and was based on the first stone bridge built in 1200. Join us for a tour of this historic market town.

About This Cartridge

Let us be your tour guides, transporting you back to older times and showing you the town as it used to be.

Visiting 21 locations around the surrounding area over a 2.7 mile walk, this should take you between 1 and 2 hours, depending on how fast you walk and how much you read along the way!

Whilst the paths within Tadcaster town itself are accessible to all, you will be walking alongside a muddy, undulating riverside path for some of the way. As such we would recommend sturdy footwear, and would advise that the Wherigo is therefore unsuitable for pushchairs, wheelchairs and those with mobility issues.

There are cows that roam freely alongside the river and on occasion they may be on the path you need to take, we do the walk with our geohound however we will leave it up to you to assess whether or not you bring your dog. It is a regular dog walking route, and the cows are used to human and canine traffic.

Turn in to the road as if you are going to Sainsburys, then continue past the supermarket entrance and park at the end of the road.

We parked as suggested and were soon on our tour. A lovely start along the riverbank and it was only when we neared the end of this part of the walk that we encountered slippy mud and had to tread carefully where the path narrowed.

The Wherigo was well presented and we enjoyed thinking about bygone days and comparing the old photographs. For us, it brought back particular memories of childhood trips to the seaside and the smell of malt and outings to our own Plaza and ABC cinemas.

We had one problem in town where the stages are so close, we had to leave a zone and go back into it in order to progress but apart from that it worked really well on our IPhone. We also couldn’t find one of the answers required and made a panic call to the CO for reassurance we wouldn’t have to go back to the beginning if we answered incorrectly!

Arriving at GZ Lynne was trying to get the phone to zero in whilst Mally spotted the cache from the path, right above her head 😁😁. The log was signed and safely returned but still the phone wouldn’t register. It took a good 10 minutes of waving it around whilst tentatively holding on until at last it asked if we wanted a hint! We didn’t, but had to say yes to continue and finally we had our completion code. Yay!!! 😁😁😁

Thanks to thecatts for setting this Wherigo and providing us with an enjoyable couple of hours. A favourite point awarded.
