Tour of historic Arkansas Ordnance Plant locations.

About This Cartridge

On June 4, 1941, the War Department notified Governor Homer Adkins and Congressman David D. Terry that a $33,000,000 fuse and detonator plant was approved for immediate construction in Jacksonville, Pulaski County, Arkansas.  The plant was the first national defense industry approved for the state and the only one to make detonators, fuses, boosters, and primers. The need for protection from sabotage and for plant security made a guard force and guard houses a necessary part of the plan. Sixty guard houses were built and placed around the 6,895 acre site. Because of the danger from explosives processed at the facility people entering the site were not allowed to bring in matches or any metal. The guard houses, such as the one being nominated, provided a facility for guards to check for unauthorized people and not allow any matches or metal objects to enter the facility.  World War II, developing instead a more industrialized economy.

Starting Location

The starting location for this tour is the Jacksonville Military Museum, where you will find an AOP Guard Shack, a helicopter, an F-105 airplane, a titan II memorial, and a bell tower memorial.

I love learning new things about the buildings and places that I pass by all the time and never take notice of. History is everywhere and this cache proves it. Loved it! Thanks for all the work you put into the cache. :)

Well, I guess everyone in central Arkansas is saving this one for August, to pick up a souvenir. So if someone has to be first, it might as well be me! I will get my August souvenir cache elsewhere! I am beginning to really enjoy Wherigos, and I am glad to see them pop up in more and more places in Arkansas. This Wherigo provided a great historical tour of a part of Jacksonville's past that I was unfamiliar with before today. I was able to do the first 3 stages on foot, but then I had to use my car to pick up the rest. In the process, I was amazed at how spread out the old ordnance plant was! I guess it needed to be to prevent a chain reaction of explosions if one of the production facilities in the plant had an accident. The cartridge worked great with each page opening up smoothly once I got into the "zone", and I didn't have it freeze up on me at all. The only problem I had was that it did not provide me with an unlock code once I got to the physical cache location (the cartridge said I was within 6 feet, but nothing happened at that point). I have not run into this problem before with other cartridges, so I cannot ventute a guess as to what went wrong. Regardless, a nice history lesson and tour, and it did take less than an hour. For someone more familiar with Jacksonville, it will probably be doable in less than 30 minutes! This one gets a favorite point for me, because I know from experience that it took a lot of work.
