About This Cartridge

A guided Tour around Northampton's Cultural Quarter

The Cultural Quarter of the town Northampton, England, is in the centre of the town. It is sometimes referred to as Derngate, which was the name of a gate in the old town walls located there.

The quarter was officially launched by Northampton Borough Council in early 2013. It is noted in particular for Northampton Museum, theatre complex Royal & Derngate, historic house 78 Derngate, Art Gallery NN and the Errol Flynn Filmhouse. It also has bars, restaurants, pubs, hair salons and fashion shops as well as housing and offices. Northampton High School for Girls was located here before moving to Hardingstone and the area developed for housing.

Starting Location

The tour starts at 78 Derngate, a Grade II* Listed Georgian house, noted for its interior, which was extensively redeveloped in 1916-7 by Charles Rennie Mackintosh for local businessman and modelmaker, Wenman Joseph Bassett-Lowke. It has been open to the

A pleasant walk around the town in the cold and dark. The cartridge worked well on my trusty and old Colorado, one stage needed me to wander up and down a little but it could have been the buildings interfering with the signal. I had to linger at the final stage until it was muggle free.

This was our first attempt at a wherigo, and it took around an 45 mins at a very leisurely stroll. Everything worked properly, I used an iPhone 4s, twodocs used an iPhone 6, and both devices worked flawlessly. The final location was just a little tricky (and would be even harder for short people) but we managed to retrieve and replace the container without embarrassing ourselves. The completion code was 18 characters long, and would not unlock the capsule until the last 3 were shaved off to give the regulation 15 characters. Anyway, all is good, and the cache is still in good condition. Thanks.

My first Whereigo. Completed this lunchtime. Struggled to get signal at first location but thereafter very straightforward. Thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks very much.

I like a good Wherigo, and I've been meaing to done this one for ages, so it seemed like an ideal way to finish off the year.

I normally rely on my trusty old PDA with bluetooth GPS - but this time I decided to put my trust in new technology and use the Android Wherigo player (WhereYouGo) on my phone. It didn't work too well at first, saying the start zone was just over 1,000km away (E14 degrees?!) - but once I'd allowed it to access the GPS things improved dramatically.

Like lodgebarn I had trouble getting into the zone at 78 Derngate, but after 10 minutes of wandering around I finally managed to gain access right outside the front door. After that it was plain sailing, and the roadworks outside the museum are now complete. I had no idea that this area was officially "The Cultural Quarter" - but there are now signs to prove it.

I was only just able to reach the final, and stealth was difficult to achieve - but log signed and replaced successfully. TFTW and Happy New Year!

P.S. To log a successful completion, drop the last (16th) letter of the completion code...

P.P.S. I am not related to Mr Bassett-Lowke!
