We’ve just returned from an extraordinary week-long journey to the northern reaches of Norway, undertaken to honor the memory of the Polish heroes who fought in the Battle of Narvik during World War II.
The journey itself was long and demanding — it began with an 18-hour ferry crossing to the vicinity of Stockholm, followed by a nearly 19-hour bus ride. We traveled across almost the entire length of Sweden, along the scenic shores of the Bothnian Bay, and then through the rugged, beautiful landscapes of Kiruna, eventually reaching the border with Norway and crossing the Scandinavian mountain range to finally arrive in Narvik, on the opposite side of the peninsula.
Over the next several days, we had the opportunity to explore Narvik and the nearby village of Hakvik — places marked by history and heroism. We visited numerous memorials commemorating the battles and cemeteries where Polish soldiers who fell in combat are laid to rest. It was a deeply moving experience, filled with reflection and a sense of national pride.
We also experienced the phenomenon of the midnight sun — where daylight persists around the clock. With 24 hours of sunlight, the sense of time became blurred, giving each day an almost surreal atmosphere.
Beyond the historical and commemorative aspects of the trip, we also found moments to admire the local nature. We encountered herds of reindeer, saw frozen lakes and snowy landscapes that, just 30 kilometers away, transitioned into spring — and even early summer — scenery. The climate contrast was truly remarkable. We were also warmly welcomed by the local Polish community, which added a special, familial atmosphere to our stay.
During our free time — and thanks to the bright nights — we also managed to go geocaching. It was a great opportunity to discover local hiding techniques — many thanks to the cache creators! Luckily, most of the snow had already melted, making it easier to reach the coordinates and find the caches. Still, it was clear from the way they were hidden that even in winter conditions, the caches remain accessible, albeit with the environment looking quite different.
Warm greetings from Poland
