About This Cartridge

INSTRUCTIONS: Head to each of the zones. Wait for the bird to show up, you may need to be patient. There should be reasonable parking at each zone and a spot to view the real birds. Please feel free to record your observations in your log. When each bird arrives use your bird guide and / or your general knowledge to answer the bird question in each zone. You score a point for each correct question, zero for a wrong answer. You need a score of four before the final zone is activated, so you can only afford one wrong answer! Turn your volume up!

Starting Location

Hoopers Inlet - Otago Peninsula.

Finally, a Wherigo which works on an Oregon 450. Our birdwatching session started with almost a bang, as a pukeko flew across the road in front of our car as we arrived at the inlet.

At the start point we got a "you would enjoy this more in the real world" message, but luckily that went away without causing problems. Four of the questions were general knowledge, but one would have been a 50:50 without Andrew Crowe's "Which NZ Bird?" to help us. A heart-stopping moment as we were going to the last zone (you only need four, but we wanted full value out of this cache) and a question popped up on the screen, followed by a "You are doing this at home, the cartridge will now exit" message... thankfully, it didn't.

Mrs Daywalk Senior enjoyed the driving around and back around the inlet in horrid cold rain, but was disappointed that she wasn't being expected to see and identify birds as part of the cache. She found doing a quiz on the GPS was weirdly disconnected from the real world.

Our birdspotting list- kingfishers, spur-winged plovers, black backed gulls, many pairs of paradise ducks (a male chasing away an extra female in one case), black swans, white-faced herons, and a flock of pied stilts at the final, and oyster-catchers at Portobello. So we did get enough to pass in the real world!
